Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
304 pages | Published by Park Row Books

The Set Up: Grace is celebrating finished her PhD in Vegas, where she marries a stranger. Completely burnt out from academia and the stress of starting a career, she escapes to New York for the summer to get to know Yuki, her new wife. But as the summer comes to an end, Grace knows she must face all the things she’s been running from.
Honey Girl was not at all the book I thought it would be. It’s been on my shelf for a couple of years, and I always assumed it was a light hearted rom-com. It was a lot deeper than that. This book is about loneliness and identity, and I think captured the millennial experience of burnout and uncertainty so well.
I really loved these two found families - Grace’s community in Portland and Yuki’s in New York. Each character was beautifully human, just trying to do their best.
The writing was elevated yet readable, and while the romance wasn’t the main focus, it was still a sweet part of the story. Definitely a book that took me by surprise in the best way.
