The Set Up: Rory has returned temporarily to her hometown to support her pregnant twin sister, but after a night out she crashes into a large animal and is attached in the woods. She survives with miraculously few injuries, but then realizes the scars from her attack are not normal. Suddenly she’s unnaturally strong, sensitive to silver, ravenously hungry for meat, and more and more certain she may now be a werewolf.

Such Sharp Teeth was definitely not what I expected but in a good way! I went in thinking it would be darker and grittier but the tone was surprisingly light with a decent splash of humor and romance that I ended up really enjoying.

I thought it was really clever to have Rory undergoing this werewolf transformation the same time as her sister’s pregnancy. The book talks a lot about trauma and bodily autonomy, and I loved the way the author wove the memories of Rory’s past trauma in to her current situation.

The short, clipped writing style took me a minute to get used to, but once I sat down to give this book dedicated attention I flew through it. I was desperate to know who the other werewolf in town was and I really wanted to see how Rory’s friends and family would react to her changes—those moments were some of my favorites in the book.

While I would never shelve this book as a romance, there was enough flirting (zero spice, for inquiring minds) and relationship drama for me to wholeheartedly recommend to romance readers. Ultimately I thought it was a really engaging and quick read, and I’ve already added a couple more of Rachel Harrisons books to my TBR.
